Working with a variety of creatives and executives at the highest level in an industry certainly contributed to developing my creativity and technical skills. But I also gained a wealth of knowledge about the people behind the scenes and the business of the business. I developed confidence in myself, specifically that I can complete any task given to me. I learned that you need to have a team around you to help you complete those tasks as well. It is never a solo adventure, even when working alone on a project. Those you surround yourself with are a key factor in your success.

Balancing Technical Demands: Leading with Creative Empathy

Most of my team are strictly engineers, so I do demand continuous learning and the pursuit of technical knowledge from all of us. However, I also emphasize that, because we are helping a Producer or Creative Director achieve their creative vision, we must think beyond the technical aspects of audio post. We need to identify creatively with what is happening in the project and, when necessary, contribute to it while ensuring everything remains technically aligned. We must think like the driver of a car while also understanding how the engine is built and how it works.

Audience feedback is important. They are the end user, and we create the product that they consume. It is weighted more heavily from a business perspective than creative, but the two go hand in hand. Ultimately, we are creating for that audience.

The biggest problem with audio post-production today is still the same as it was 10 years ago. Budgets have continued to shrink, while the amount of work has increased. It is pivotal to find resources, software and technology that can help you move faster and more efficiently.

Simply put, AI is the true game-changer. Whether through specialized plugins or advanced LLMs and other AI platforms trained for specific audio and video tasks, these technologies are set to redefine the way post-production work is executed, making processes faster, more precise and increasingly adaptable to creative demands.

My best piece of advice would be to make sure you love doing this kind of work. It can’t just be about money/awards. There will be times where you feel a bit lost or doubtful, tired, etc. Just keep pushing forward, meeting people, learning and applying both the experience and knowledge you gain as each year passes by.
